What the cluck are we doing?

Pete has always wanted chickens. Actually, he's always wanted ducks and geese, but a girl's gotta put her foot down once in a while. So, we (I...) decided to do chickens.

Fortunately for us, Pete has a friend who turned his ice shack into a chicken coop last year, and, after an unsuccessful six months or so of raising chickens, decided the hobby wasn't for him. So, he's GIVING us his coop!! Wooohoo! Now all we need to do is build a chicken run, which Pete *promised* would be inexpensive (although, so far we've spent about $300 - our coop is going to be the Fort Knox of coops...).

We ordered the chicks (14 hens, 1 rooster) and they'll be here in May.

At the same time, I've decided to start gardening. Not flowers, but FOOD! I've never been able to keep a plant alive - so I've spent a ton of time reading and researching and have decided on container gardening. I'm a total convert now thanks to Mike at Urban Organic Gardener. On top of building the chicken run this week, we're also going to spend a ton of time creating the self-watering containers for my 150 seedlings. We also got a dehydrator, and I've been practicing my skills by dehydrating anything that doesn't move...

So, welcome. Get ready for lots of pictures, writing, successes, and failures! They'll all be shared!
